Established by Executive Order 13556, the Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) program standardizes the way the Executive branch handles unclassified information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to and consistent with law, regulations, and Government-wide policies.

This white paper looks at important elements of the CUI Framework, including marking and safeguarding CUI to meet the requirements of Federal CUI Rule (32 CFR Part 2002), and NIST Special Publication 800-171. It will be of interest to both federal and nonfederal organizations, including federal agencies, federal contractors, colleges and universities, and state, local, and tribal governments.
